AITA for planting flowers in my elderly neighbor’s empty garden patch without telling her?

So I (27F) live next door to an older woman, "Mrs. L." She used to have the most beautiful front garden, roses, daisies, even sunflowers taller than me.

But over the past year, she's had health issues and hasn't been able to tend to them.

The patch started looking really sad, just weeds and dry soil. One weekend, I decided to do something small.

I bought a few flower seedlings and planted them along her fence line. I made sure not to touch any of her old plants or decorations, just added some color back where it used to be.

A few days later, she came outside and saw them. I was worried she might be upset, but instead she started crying (the happy kind) and said, "It looks alive again." She keeps calling them "our flowers" now, and she waters them from her porch.

But a friend told me I might've overstepped by doing it without asking first, that even though it turned out nice, it's still someone else's space.

I honestly just wanted to bring her a little joy. So... AITA for planting flowers in my neighbor's garden without asking first?

ladyxanax I think it was a lovely gesture and she seems very happy about it, so I wouldn't worry about what anyone else says. Kindness can go a long ways and we need more of it in the . Definitely NTA. world.

hengehanger What kind of person witnesses a generous, loving gesture, gratefully and sweetly received, and criticises it? A shrivelled, sour, dried up person, that's what kind. These are for you OP *

lj121980 It gave her something to come out and do, it's important she stays mobile, and by the sounds of it she lives flowers and loves the ones you planted.
  • 13
ZealousidealPhase543 If she was affronted by you doing that, you could have taken the flowers out. NTA at all. Very kind and heartfelt gesture OP.

leddik02 Most cases I would agree with your friend as you don't know how someone will react. It sounds like you are familiar with your neighbor so you know her best. NTA
  • 15
MimbleWimble1 I bet your friend can turn any positive into a negative.

Yourownhands52 NTA Ive been dealing with back problems and yard work is hard. I do the bare minimum.

I would absolutely love if someone helped plant the yearly flowers and make my house better looking. That lady probably planted flowers every spring until she couldn't. You made her year!

Not_a_Bot2800 No. You knew she wasn't able to and how much she loved them. If she didn't want them I'm sure she say so. You've done a wonderful thing. Please, spread your kindness. I sprinkle native seeds in open spaces when I walk or bike. Not in State Parks though. But along sidewalks and such.

EurekaBoyd 1979 You read the room correctly. NTA

higeAkaike In general better to ask, but if you know the person would like it, and this case she did. It was a great gesture
  • 22
Reasonable-Towel-214 NTA, If she objected then your friend's concern would be valid but as the lady is happy with your gesture there is no harm done and you've brought some cheer to her day.
  • 23
RaymondLuxYacht Who are these people that criticize random acts of kindness? Definitely NTA. You warmed this woman's heart. Carry on I say!!

Dreamybook1357 You did something nice for your neighbour that could easily have been reversed if needed, but your neighbour loved it. Ntah, don't let that person rain on your parade.
